Turmeric Extract
Also known as: Curcuma Longa Root Extract, Curcumin, Haldi
Description
Turmeric extract is derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa. Its primary active compound, curcumin, is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It has been used in traditional Indian medicine for skin conditions for millennia and is now widely incorporated into modern skincare formulations for its brightening and anti-inflammatory properties.
Mechanism of Action
Curcumin inhibits NF-κB and AP-1 transcription factors, downregulating the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6). It scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulates endogenous antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase). Curcumin also inhibits tyrosinase activity, reducing melanin synthesis and contributing to skin brightening. Additionally, it modulates TGF-β signaling to promote wound healing.
