Neem Extract
Also known as: Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Azadirachta Indica, Indian Lilac
Description
Neem extract is derived from the leaves of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), a plant native to the Indian subcontinent. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. The active compounds include nimbin, nimbidin, and azadirachtin.
Mechanism of Action
Contains nimbidin and other limonoids that inhibit bacterial growth (particularly Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus) by disrupting cell membrane integrity. Azadirachtin interferes with prostaglandin synthesis, providing anti-inflammatory effects. Quercetin and other flavonoids contribute antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress in the skin.
